Axion AXN-8701 - 7 Inch LCD Widescreen - Portable TV
The world in the palm of your hand
Televisions have been a symbol of modernity, prosperity and mass media since the second half of the last century, They have received a permanent place in our living rooms, and it is no exaggeration to say they have shaped our world in that they has spread information like no media had done before. TV has truly brought the world into our homes.
As old as the technology is, is as long as people have been trying to improve on it. Naturally we've seen some great advances, black and white to color, dimensions of the screens, analog to digital and lately the rise in popularity of HD, But one project has never really caught on; portable TV.
Sinclair Research, more famous for its commercial disaster Sinclair C5, gave us the first commercial near-pocket TV in the nineteen seventies, the MTV - 1. I say near-pocket TV because with its tiny grayscale monitor and enormous battery, you'd need a pretty big pocket to call it a pocket TV, but one selling point was that is could receive both PAL and NTSC transmissions, making it perfect for gadget-hungry jet setters. To be honest, with a price tag of $395 (equal to $1,309.66 today), gadget-hungry jet setters were probably the only ones who could afford it, the MTV -1 lost the company £1.8m in 1978 accordingly.
With the coming of age of the Printed circuit board and Integrated circuit, electronics started to reduce in size, and rapidly. So when Sony introduced the Watchman FD-210 in 1982 it was noticeably smaller, though not quite small enough for your pocket. And due to another innovation, LCD, a later generation, the FDL-310 had a color screen. Watchman continued to sell well into the 1990s. Though the devise size to screen size ratio was always an issue.
Those who have been shopping around lately would have noticed LCDs are getting cheaper. One of the technologies profiting from this is the portable TV.
The latest generation is higher quality and affordable, leading this generation is the Axion AXN-8701. As we've seen before manufacturers have always been searching for the happy medium between devise size and screen size, and with it 5.7x7.2x1.2 inches (H x W x D) and 7 inch LCD widescreen, it looks like Axion has done just that.
The Axion AXN-8701 includes: a built-in antenna and an external one, built-in ATSC/NTSCTV tuner for both analog and digital channels, built-in rechargeable battery and even a car charger as well. It's a 7" LCD screen, two high quality speakers for stereo sound, remote control, adjustable brightness, volume control, headphone jack. Along with A/V inputs so you can hook other things up to it as well, such as game consoles and DVD player. All of this packed into a sleek, mat black cover.
All in All it's a great little gadget, perfect solution for someone who wants to, let's say, watch their cooking show in the kitchen but has no room for a bulky TV, and a life saver for endless car trip or the dentist waiting room. With the Axion AXN-8701 you can enjoy all the entertainment and information of your living room TV where ever you are.

The Kindle - Books have finally caught on
One can not look at a kindle and not think; IPod. Not only for the fact that with it's monochrome screen and white plastic body it kind of looks like the first IPods, but also because what iPods and mp3s in general have done for music, so has the kindle done for literature.
