The Wedding Day Is Most Peoples' Primary Focus, But The Wedding Rehearsal Supper Can Be Memorable, Too


There are countless preparations, expenses and anxieties that go together with arranging a wedding ceremony. If couples aren't mindful they can get so taken in with planning the wedding and attempting to get all the details right that there's little time to enjoy the experience. When my niece was planning her wedding ceremony she had three bridal showers to go to, reception plans to make and was trying to nail down a place for the rehearsal dinner. The third bridal shower was located at my house. I'm her godmother so I had wanted to do something unique for her. Shortly before the shower we talked on the phone. She sounded very pressured. She and her fiance were also having difficulties selecting the best wedding songs for the ceremony. I recommended that she come the night before the bridal shower and stay the night and we would relax and I would help her make a list of what remained to be done prior to the wedding. She thought this sounded like a great plan.

I did the majority of the preparations for the shower prior to my niece arriving so that we could focus on her needs. She said that the rehearsal dinner was her primary stress due to the fact that the place they had reserved had double booked, so they needed to find a new location. We started by working on finding the best wedding songs for the wedding so we could get one requirement out of the way thereby giving confidence that the other would be handled as well. As I thought finding the best wedding songs was just a matter of searching the net, listening to samples, ordering and that was that. Now on to the rehearsal dinner.

The rehearsal dinner is normally arranged by the groom's family; in fact some people refer to the rehearsal dinner as the groom's supper. My niece's fiance is from out of state so his family is willing to pay for the rehearsal dinner, but they're not able to help with making the preparations. My niece had reached out to the restaurant where the wedding reception will be held, but the only available space was the part where the wedding reception would be happening. My niece said that the plan was to decorate the wedding reception area prior to going to the church for the rehearsal.

We called two neighboring restaurants to see if they could handle the rehearsal dinner. Both had other happenings scheduled. Her fiance's mom and dad are divorced, also both have married again. This meant that there were additional people to incorporate in the rehearsal dinner. This was also adding to her stress because she was trying to figure out the etiquette for seating. She had the seating chart figured out for the wedding, but not knowing the place the rehearsal dinner would be located diminished her capability to plan a chart.

I asked my niece if she had called the church to see if the fellowship area would be accessible. Everyone could just mingle and have a light catered meal. This would be quite a bit less formal and would be much less difficult to plan. The fellowship area was open that day. We called two delis and ordered food. My niece called her fiance and told him the new plans for the rehearsal dinner. He thought this sounded fantastic. He would make arrangements to have a pal of his tend bar and would arrange for the drinks.

The rehearsal dinner was a pleasant relaxed evening. The guests were able to socialize and mingle and the bride and groom did not feel pressured to sit in one spot while everyone ordered their food and had it served. With having a buffet line the ambiance was very casual and the out of town guests did not have to attempt to find another site in an area that they were not familiar with.
